MikeyJ and Johnny Boy to Headline Prom

Like wildfire, a Twitter petition spread through Woodbridge High School’s senior class seeking to grant a special performance from local hit rapper, Mikey J, during this year’s prom.

The petition quickly picked up Township-wide attention and caught the eyes of prom advisor Ms. Hain, who seemed skeptical at first on the issue. “To this point, we’d never attempted anything like this at our senior prom,” Ms. Hain said.

The decision to book the young Woodbridge artist was made by vote at the February 28th prom committee meeting, and word quickly spread among the student body when it was tweeted by senior class advisor Mr. Switek, setting a personal record for his twitter outreach with 25 likes and 30 retweets.

Following the breaking news, Mr. Switek launched a schoolwide search for another senior to open for MikeyJ at prom. Through a Twitter poll, rising Woodbridge artist Johnny boy quickly became the likely candidate.

“It’s truly a blessing and I’m grateful; I owe my fans and my supporters. CHEE!” Johnny Boy posted to his finsta account to acknowledge and appreciate the honor.

With the addition of Johnny Boy, prom ticket prices skyrocketed, with one scalper estimating he can get $400 cash for a pair of tickets at table 12, halfway between the buffet and the open-air photo booth.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Ms. Hain said about the interest in the event. “We always pack the place, but this year is going to be special with MikeyJ bringing it.”

Over the last five years, Woodbridge High School has slowly but surely become a hip-hop and rap music epicenter, with a respectable growth in the school’s SoundCloud outreach. Staff and students alike agree that current senior Michael McLaughlin, aka “MikeyJ,” has been a staple in the SoundCloud game since his arrival in 2015.

MikeyJ could be found performing at the Woodbridge Community Center on Friday nights for the middle schoolers attending teen night and, over the years, has worked his way up to become a familiar face in the Woodbridge Township rap scene with various instagram freestyles, rap battles with other locals, and hit song remixes.

New to the Woodbridge rap scene is senior John Adebola, aka “Johnny Boy,” who entered the SoundCloud ranks with a very unique story and style.

The Nigerian native’s dope tracks originally featured a heavy Afro-pop beat influence that differed from what students at WHS were accustomed to. His electric personality and constant work ethic–he seemingly churns out tracks daily–has kept fans interested.

This historical performance will take place May 31st. Tickets, however, are now sold out.
