Mr. O’Halloran Offers Intro to Journalism in Fall Semester

Ryan Fijol, Reporter

The deadline for Woodbridge High School students to request classes for next school year is drawing to a close.  As part of an ongoing series to give students information on available electives, the Barron Perspective interviewed Mr. O’Halloran about the Introduction to Journalism class.

Intro to Journalism is taught by Mr. O’ Halloran, who has been teaching at Woodbridge High School for 10 years, and also teachers Creative Writing 1 and 2, Multimedia Journalism, and Broadcast Journalism.

This course is offered at the R track level, and requires students to have passed English 1 before taking it. It is offered in the fall semester and there is an average of about 10 students enrolled in the class every year.

Barron Persective: How did you become the teacher for this class?
Mr. O’ Halloran: Mr. Switek used to teach this class, and then he became an SAT Prep teacher, so I was asked to take over.

BP: What do you enjoy about teaching this class?
MO: I love that we get to do so many different things. I enjoy teaching the history of American Journalism, discussing ethics and court cases, and also teaching how to write in that style because it’s very different from what students are used to.

BP: Why should students take this class?
MO: I think it’s a great course for students who are interested in the field of journalism, and also for students who want to work on their writing.

BP: What should students expect to learn from taking this class?
MO: Students should expect a lot of research and writing, but also a lot of fun. I try to keep it loose.

BP: How can students contact you with questions about this class?
MO: Students can email me at [email protected].
