On This Day – November 23rd (1st U.S. Olympic Games)

On this day, November the 23rd, in the year of 1904, the first Olympic Games to take place in the United States, held in and around St. Louis, Missouri, came to an end.

The games weren’t the comirlzled spectacle it is today, nor was it as popular. 1904s Olympics saw many setbacks, the first being that it changed locations from Chicago, Illinois to St. Louis to take  place with an anniversary celebration of the Louisiana Purchase, hurting attendance for the games.

Alongside that, rising tensions in the European continent wasn’t conducive for sporting competition. As a result of these factors, the majority of the competitors were Americans or Candians.

The U.S. won over 230 medals and ninety five gold medals (Olympics) (Britannica).

After these games , the U.S. would go on to host the Summer Olympic Games three more times in 1932 in Los Angeles, California, 1984 in L.A. again, and in 1996, being held in Atlanta, Georgia. The nation would hold the Winter Olympic Games in 1932 in Lake Placid, New York, 1960 in Squaw Valley, California, 1980 once again in Lake Placid, and 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah (Library of Congress).

The Summer Games are set to be held in the United States again in L.A. in 2028 (Sporting News).
