The Barron Perspective asked fall sport captains and athletes about their team’s best game-winning plays. Here are the top six plays listed in no particular order.
- Football – September 9, 2016, Woodbridge vs. Colonia at Colonia
Running back Da’Avian Ellington scores on a handoff up the middle. Once he broke the line of scrimmage, he got hit by a Colonia player. The fans thought he was going to get tackled, but he kept his feet going, broke all the tackles, and sprinted 15 yards to the end zone. – Dylan Leone
- Volleyball – September 12, 2016, Woodbridge vs. Monroe at Monroe
It was the third set. The volleyball team lost the first set and almost lost the second. They were up 24-23 and all they needed were two points to win. Alyssa Abatemarco was serving; she hit the tape of the net and the ball went straight down to get an ace and they won the game. – Alyssa Abatemarco
- Cross Country – October 7th, 2016, at Greystone Park
Following a disappointing performance at the tri-meet that Tuesday, losing to North Brunswick and Spotswood, the cross country team came out strong at an invitational at Greystone. They took third overall against numerous other schools, a first in the school’s history. – Domenic Schnee
- Girls’ Soccer – September 27, 2016, Woodbridge vs. Edison at Woodbridge
Sophia Gomez kicked a penalty kick into the bottom left corner of the goal with less than two minutes remaining, giving the team a 3-2 lead. – Jordan Vazquez
- Boys’ Soccer – September 20, 2016, Carteret vs. Woodbridge at Woodbridge
Khalid Mamman reverse-flicked the ball over the keeper in the 10th minute and scored. This play wasn’t the game winning goal, but gave the team momentum to win 3-2. – Khalid Mamman
- Girls’ Tennis – September 26, 2016, GMC Tournament
The Girls’ Tennis team was ahead in their game. They needed to win by two points; the last point was the opponent’s serve. Lisbeth Perez was up at the net, Woodbridge returned the ball straight to the opponent and she sliced it back (means putting a lot of spin on a ball thus making it hard to return). Perez managed to get behind it and smash it down towards the net. The shot had so much force it bounced several feet above the opponents and got stuck in the fence. Woodbridge was the first to make it past the preliminary round. – Lisbeth Perez
