Bags Banned
Most schools ban hoods, hats, and jackets but Woodbridge High School takes more precautions for their students by banning bags both in school and outside of school. Now at events such as basketball games, football games, and dances no bags are permitted into the place of the event for safety reasons, and just for taking that extra precaution to keep all students and faculty safe.
Any bag the size of a tote bag, backpack, or large purse is not allowed. Bags like clutches, wallets, and small hand or shoulder bags are allowed. Bigger bags will not be permitted since the larger the bag is the more unnecessary things others can carry.
Having a rule like this comes with its complaints, while other students think the rule makes sense. One student-athlete Ariella Murdacco, a Color Guard member who goes to almost every single football game to perform, was questioned about this new rule.
“It doesn’t exactly affect us since our color guard jackets have pretty big pockets,” said Murdacco. “We can just use that to carry any other stuff we may need to hold.
While some athletes explained the rule doesn’t affect them as much as regular students say otherwise. Another student, Natalie Haulenbeck, believes bags would make things easier for her.
“I sometimes have a lot of stuff I need to carry to games and not be able to bring my tote bag with me, making it a lot harder since I have to fit everything in a tiny little bag,” said Haulenbeck.
Despite the complaints, the bag rule was a district-wide initiative that is aiming to provide safer environments both in and out of our building.
“I get why the school made this rule, it can be unsafe and a little dangerous with people carrying such big bags and I understand they just want us all to be extra safe,” said Haulenbeck.
No Bags Provide Safety
This bag ban is annoying to some students and not affecting other students. The school made this rule hoping to keep students extra safe, which makes sense since no one knows anyone’s intentions and what they can bring to the school or events planned by the school.
Teachers were interviewed and asked questions about this new rule. One teacher, Madame Pankiv, gave great feedback on this rule.
“I strongly believe all of our students will be much safer now that bags are banned,” said Pankiv. “[Individuals] who aren’t very responsible won’t be able to bring unnecessary items to our events.”
The ban has been in place since the beginning of the school year, and the district wants everyone to be safe and happy attending any events our school puts on.
