Lockers Prohibited
In the second week of school, Woodbridge High School administration announced that students were prohibited from their lockers before, during or after lunch on a daily basis.
The rule is a way for administration to control who is in the hallways at any given time, bringing less clogging in the hallways and better secure hallways for our students.
Students aren’t allowed to attend to their lockers because of the constant talking before and after the passing period. Students are stopping at each other’s lockers for small talk which is causing the hallways to become overcrowded.
The rule was explained in early September grade-level meetings, where Mr. Osborne, Ms. Gourdine-Broadway, and Mr. Mosko held an announcement in the auditorium. The meeting covered rule enforcements for the year, including no lockers during third block, no bags, and cell phone usage in classrooms.
Discussion on Lockers
Questions have risen from students because they don’t know how they are supposed to bring their lunch if the no bags rule is in place. Despite the issues, the rule has clearly solved some of the congestion in the hallways during passing time before and after lunches. While the rule has succeeded, students still voiced some displeasure.
“I think this rule was a bad decision because we should be able to go to our lockers during lunch,” said Itzely Romero, sophomore at WHS. “We need space to eat and we should be able to be with our friends.”
While not every decision will be a popular one, Mr. Mosko noted that the decisions made are entirely student focused, and every decision has the student’s best interest in mind.
“We wanted third block to be treated like every other block,” said Mr. Mosko. “I noticed a lot of people going to their lockers for their lunch.”
Mr. Mosko stated that in order to keep hallways clear, consequences could be handed out for people trying to use lockers during prohibited times. Mr. Mosko stated if you are a repeated offender, and have been warned multiple times, it can result in either morning or after school detention.
A huge issues is people gathering at their locker causes a lot of interruptions to students with classes nearby. While students may feel it is unfair, the administration states that the rule is in place to help students in their classrooms.
