On Tuesday, September 29th, Woodbridge High School’s Video Game Club held its first meeting of the year, welcoming all interested students.
To commence the first meeting, Mr. Hoyer went over all of the logistics of the club: “Meetings are every other Tuesday and we will always meet in D8. We have everything from Super Smash Bros. to Street Fighter. Additionally, if you guys like video games, you’ve come to the right club.”
Over twenty students were present for the meeting, and they converged on the consoles and games that piqued their interest. Students turned TVs on, while the club leaders, seniors Josh Hondolero and Marshé Joseph, set up all the machines.
The atmosphere was very friendly and welcoming. The meeting was only an hour long, and tournaments and matches made the short time pass quickly.
Towards the end of the meeting, Mr. Hoyer discussed with the club members some of his favorite games. Titles ranged from action games like Doom, to arcade games like Dodonpachi, and even fighting games like Super Street Fighter 5. He made sure to stress that this was a club for all video games.
The preferred games at the club were usually co-op games because they have more than enough TVs for students to play some single player games if that’s what they’re interested in.
Mr. Hoyer stressed the fact that all students in Woodbridge High School are welcome to try the club out, even if they do not think they’re interested in games. “Just like Wayne Gretzky said, ‘you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.’”
