The Woodbridge High School Girls’ Basketball team began the 2016-2017 season with a record of six wins and zero losses for the first time in years, besting their opponents in each contest by at least 17 points.
“It felt great,” said Sierra Twomey, the senior point guard/shooting guard. “We worked so hard for it. We would run and train all the time. It was a great feeling to win because we’ve never started off a season like that before.”
Junior point guard Aliyah Santos shared Twomey’s excitement. “It was something that most people probably didn’t see coming… that hasn’t happened in years.”
The girl’s achievement this year shows how in sync they are with each other and the coaching. Twomey attributes the success to how close the team has grown with one another. “We get along great on and off the court. We’re like family,” she said.
The team’s early success can also be attributed to motivation. Head Coach Timinski said the girls are all very self-motivated, hard working, great kids.
Having a group of students who are hardworking is the first step, and having a great coach is the second. Coach Timinski is very experienced, having played basketball throughout high school and college.
The girl’s biggest win, statistically, was against cross-town rivals John F. Kennedy Memorial High School. The final score was 63-17, defeating the Mustangs by 46 points.
Although the JFK game was their largest margin victory, Coach Timinski is prouder of the win over Elizabeth, which ended 55-38. “They are a tough team in a big city and I was definitely proud of how we played that game,” he said.
Although the season began well enough, the Lady Barrons faltered before righting the ship. With plenty of games left, Coach Timinski said, “I feel very excited… I truly believe our best basketball season is ahead of us.”
