During the fourth block on Nov. 13, Woodbridge High School’s Save Our Strays club held its service dog event. This event consisted of five service dogs being brought to Woodbridge High School, and students being taught about therapy dogs and their training.
The S.O.S club participates in events with animals, including; the Louis’ Legacy Adoption event. The club is held by Mr. Switek.
When asked what the idea behind this event was, Mr. Switek said, “It was a chance for the dogs to be in a large crowd and ensure they can act appropriately, and for the members of S.O.S club to learn about them.”
This event was held in the school’s ACE room. The dogs arrived at 12:45 p.m. and got 15 minutes to play before meeting the students and teachers at 1 p.m.
During the event, students learned about how therapy dogs are selected and trained. The club also got to meet eye dogs.
Mr. Switek said, “We learned what skills and traits are required to help the less-sighted. We got to hear stories about the dogs’ experiences and what is expected for therapy and seeing eye dogs.”
Sophomore, Marissa Sikora said, “We learned about different breeds of dogs and where they go to get trained.”
Students a part of the S.O.S club enjoyed the experience of meeting the dogs.
Sophomore, Allison McCauley, described the experience as “very enjoyable.” She also added, “It was nice to see the animals that are going to help people in the future.”
Marissa Sikora stated, “It was a really fun event and we were able to pet the dogs as well.”
Sophomore Ella Iacovou stated, “The event was very fun, I love dogs so it was nice.”
Bringing service dogs to school was an excellent way for members of the S.O.S Club to learn how these animals function and the impact they have.
