Minecraft officially came out on May 17, 2009. Since then the game has evolved countless times and has become the best-selling game of all time, with over 300 Million copies sold. People have demanded a movie for the last decade as its popularity has soared. The game has been through ups and downs but always remains popular in gaming culture, so it did not surprise fans when a movie was announced for the game. The only surprise was how long it took for the film to be successfully pitched and brought to life.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ was teased on Sept. 4, 2024, with the official trailer coming out on November 19 on the Warner Bros. YouTube channel. Fans quickly viewed them, now having 41 million and 19 million views respectively. This movie will be an event for gamers, but it’s unclear whether it will be worth the wait. A live-action Minecraft movie was not what fans were expecting, as replicating the style of the blocky game using real people and CGI settings would be difficult. Despite this, the movie has a cast with moving actors and a world with plenty of locations as shown in the trailer. They’ve done a great job at bringing the game to life, so what must bring the movie together is the plot.
Other media based on games make fans skeptical due to terrible releases from many franchises. The success of well-received movies like the Mario Movie and the Sonic movie franchise helps to ease this stigma around video game-based media, as well as contribute to internet culture with memes. Actor Jack Black’s iconic line from the trailer,“I am Steve,” quickly became a meme all over the internet. The movie has garnered a large amount of attention and it will likely succeed. The question now is will the movie be worth the wait? I interviewed Jaycob, a fan of the game who has been waiting for this film to get his opinion.

Q: “As a fan of the game, how does seeing it finally be adapted as a movie feel?”
A: “As a fan of the game since the 3DS days, I think they should have made the movie animated.”
Q: “Do you think they’ve adapted it well? Was a live-action adaptation the right style for the movie?”
A: “Live action was not the best style for them, and the first trailer did not look good. The movie should have been animated, but the second trailer looks a little better.”
Q: “What are your thoughts on the cast and characters?”
A: “Why is Jack Black there? Besides that, the cast is fine.”
Q: “Will you be watching the movie? Do you think you’re going to enjoy it?”
A: “I will be watching the movie, but I don’t think I’ll enjoy it.”
Q: “When you are watching the movie, what are you specifically looking for?”
A: “I hope they have lots of easter eggs for fans in the movie. I hope I see Notch Apples and a Herobrine reference. I hope to see some YouTubers and popular fan songs as well.”
For over a decade, fans of the game have been waiting for the game to reach the big screen. Whether you are excited or not, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ will be in theaters on April 4.
