Instead of furthering students’ education, Woodbridge High School did something no one expected. On March 5, 2017, an athletic department proposal to build a new indoor sports complex, using the entire school budget and student activities funds, was approved.
Students had raised over $15,000 through fundraising campaigns in an effort to purchase new textbooks because many of the books in the building haven’t been updated since 1877. That money is now earmarked for new soccer goals in the sports complex.
The sports complex will be built on a budget of one million dollars and with this new complex, students will now realize the true value of their education: extracurricular sports.
“I really feel that this investment will pay off in the short and long-term of our athletics programs. The stadium was a good start, but we are capable of bigger and better things.” said Athletic Director Mr. Ward.
For those students who may not be athletically inclined, the school did reserve enough money to purchase a state-of-the-art 3D printer, which will be placed in the library near one of the two currently in the building. It will be used only to print objects needed for the sports complex, like door jambs and mini models of the skeletal system for the trainer’s office.
When Varsity Baseball Coach Mr. Urbano found out Woodbridge is getting another 3D printer meant only for sports, he said, “A new 3D printer is what we need to make Woodbridge great again.”
Librarian Ms. Townley believes this is a fantastic investment. “The highlight of my day is watching that 3D printer work. Now that we’ll have two in the library, it makes my day even better,” she said.
The new 3D printer and indoor sports complex will not only lead Woodbridge to victory, but will benefit the athletic department. The Barron Perspective wishes the best of luck to all sports.
