The Barron Perspective recently sat down with Master Sergeant Diaz and Colonel Parker to discuss the all-new JROTC, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, program at Woodbridge High School.
Barron Perspective: What is JROTC?
Colonel Parker: A program offered to high schools that teaches students character education, student achievement, wellness, leadership, and diversity.
BP: What is the purpose of JROTC?
Parker: To instill in students, in United States secondary educational institutions, the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.
BP: How and when did you become involved with JROTC?
Master Sgt. Diaz: I became involved with JROTC a number of years ago while I was on recruiting duty with the Army.
BP: What did you do before coming to WHS?
Diaz: I managed a recruiting center in Northern New Jersey.
Parker: I was the division Chief of Staff of the Atlantic Division, 75th Training Command.
BP: How is your class structured?
Parker: All students are Leadership Education 1, [and they are] learning different units: life skills, civics, history, English literature, and geography, [which] are part of the curriculum.
BP: What is your favorite part of JROTC?
Diaz: Teaching new cadets drill, and ceremony and military customs.
Parker: Leadership skills.
BP: Why does WHS need this program?
Diaz: It strives to teach students the importance of citizenship.
BP: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Diaz: I enjoy being part of the Woodbridge HS family. I was greeted with warmness and kindness.
