On This Day – October 10th (Wayne Gretzky)
October 9, 2021
On this day, October the 10th, in the year of 1979, Wayne Gretzky, arguably the best ice hockey player of all time, made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) after playing in the now defunct World Hockey Association (WHA) with the Edmonton Oilers.
In 1979, some WHA teams merged with the NHL, one of those teams being the Edmonton Oilers (The Hockey Writers).
While Gretzky did not score on that night, he would go on to achieve the records for the most goals, assists, and win four Stanley Cups throughout his NHL career (NHL Records).
