On this day, November the 15th, in the year of 2001, the Xbox, Microsoft’s first foray into the video game console market, was released.

Meant to be in competition with Nintendo’s GameCube and Sony’s PlayStation 2, the console sold (all numbers are rounded) 24 million units compared to the GameCubes 21 million and the PlayStations 2 record 157 million consoles (Statista).

Being the starting console for such video game franchises as Halo, the Xbox series of consoles have been a part of the video game market to present day (Britannica).
