On this day, November the 26th, in the year of 1907, the National Hockey League, North Americas and the world’s most prominent ice hockey league, was founded.

After having a rough season, the NHLs predecessor, the National Hockey Association needed to be reorganized to keep a high level of hockey organization alive. Successful in this endeavour, players around the world seek to be a part of the NHL in the quest to win the Stanley Cup, hockey’s most coveted award (Canadian Encyclopedia).

Originally consisting of five Canadian organizations, the Quebec Bulldogs (defunct), Montreal Wanderers (defunct), Ottawa Senators (defunct, different from the Ottawa Senators today), Toronto Arenas (Toronto Maple Leafs), and Montreal Canadiens, the league now boasts thirty two teams, seven Canadian and twenty five American, with an international roster pool (NHL) (Sports Team History) (Hockey DB) (SB Nation) (Sports Team History).
