The Woodbridge Barrons Football Team is off to a hot start remaining undefeated heading into week 8. They have wins over Colonia, Watching Hills, Old Bridge, Plainfield, Linden, and most recently Perth Amboy. As well as winning the Big Central – Liberty Gold.
New Beginnings
The Woodbridge Football Team has stunned many by starting the season 6-0 under a brand new coaching staff. The team’s chemistry and dedication have been key to the unexpected success.
“Well, I wish I knew back in August that we’d be 5-0 right now, but of course, you never know how things are going to go,” said Coach Goerge before the game against Perth Amboy.
“We’ve had a couple of really close games. I think that the players have adapted to some of the things we’re doing. There were a lot of changes that went on and we didn’t get here till late in May, so it was kind of a short summer. We’re feeling real good right now, we gotta keep it down to one game at a time”
The Woodbridge High coaching staff was remodeled last season when Joseph LaSala stepped down. Coach Joe Goerge was hired to replace LaSala from South Brunswick High School where he was 10-10 his last two seasons.
Tough Battles
The Barrons have had a few nail-biters, showing their grit and dedication during weeks zero, one, and three along the route. They closed out close games against Colonia (42-39), Watchung Hills(13-10), and Old Bridge (36-34).
“Well, I think there were probably several, certainly the Colonia game,” stated Coach Goerge after he was asked what game tested the team the most. “It tested us because we got up 21 nothing real fast in the first quarter. We had a couple of turnovers and all of a sudden it was 21-14. and at half. We got ahead by another touchdown then they came back and we got ahead it was back and forth, and right down to the end we had two where we recovered an on-side kick.”
As the Barrons season rolls on so does the competition with the next games being against Montgomery, Summit, and St. Joseph’s (Metuchen).
Woodbridge Student Section
The Woodbridge High student section has been a favorite amongst fans. Here’s what the Administration, players, and students have to say.
“[The] student section has been pretty good. We had a few fluke games but when the students came out it’s a great turnout,” said senior Derek Oxner. “We rinsed and repeated the chants and cheers from last year. If it’s not broken don’t fix it”.
“It helps a lot,” said standout athlete Bryan Anderson. “ I love going to the student section after a touchdown or after a big stop. Hearing the crowd noise definitely gets us pumped up.”
“I think the student section, you know, from my standpoint of the number of students in there is amazing”, said Athletic Director Joseph Ward. “I would say we had a couple of games last year that was good, but this year it’s been like very consistently large crowds, I love it.”
