Many have been told to take higher classes such as honors, college, and advanced placement (AP). But are these classes worth taking, what do they have in store for future students? We asked a current student of AP classes in Woodbridge High School to get a better understanding.
WHS student, William Petersen talks about what AP classes he took and why.
“I took AP Psychology last year and I’ll be taking AP European History next semester. Honestly, I chose AP Psychology because I wanted to see what AP classes were like and because my friend advised me to.”
However, many students feel as if AP classes are more of a challenge rather than providing actual benefits. William refutes the claim as he talks about what benefits it provided him.
“It helped me decide my future career aspirations and that I want to spend my life helping or advising others no matter what for those who want to go one step ahead, I’d recommend thinking about what AP classes you’ll like and fit in with, I regret not taking them earlier but at the same time, it’s never too late.”
A mistake that most students make is choosing the wrong AP classes. They only take the AP classes either because it will look good or for the exam. In hindsight, it might not seem a problem but going into a subject that you may not enjoy isn’t the best course of action when it comes to courses such as AP.
“I would tell them to do research, ask their friends, and what might be more easier or interesting for them. There’s no point in taking an AP just because it looks good. If you know you won’t like the subject at all or won’t use to pursue it in the future.”
It all depends on whether you can take a rigorous course and learn something new. AP classes are a great way for you to learn about the course material. Along with improving your note-taking, studying, and time-management skills. It prepares you for the future and gives you a glimpse into what to expect in college. Remember, AP classes aren’t mandatory, if you can’t imagine yourself managing time or focusing for the class then it would be better to not take rather than force yourself to.
