The girls’ track team went to Nationals at the New York Armory on March 9th, determined to do their best, and they wouldn’t settle for anything less.

The team consists of Senior Captain Taiwo Ibironke, Juniors Kaylah Davis, Nyah Anderson and,Sophomores  Janice Igbinobaro, Catherine Catipay, Trinity Eason.

The girls competed in the 4×4 for the championship and the 4×8 in Emerging Elite. Competing in only two events, they had few chances to perform and knew they had to put their best foot forward. Janice Igbinobaro said, “We knew we had to hit a specific time to accomplish the goal we wanted to accomplish.”

Kaylah Davis added, ”I was nervous, but I knew I had to let it go in order to run a good race, and I just had to take it all out on the track.”

Hopes were high for the girls going into Nationals. Although they were also anxious, their consistent practices, hard work, and determination paid off when nationals came around.

The girls’ coach, Mr. Angatia, said, “As we got closer to nationals, the girls got really comfortable because they knew what place I wanted them to run at nationals.”

Going into Nationals, Coach Angatia had high expectations for his team. “I expected improvement with their times and their personal records. As sophomores, [Janice Igbinobaro, Catherine Catipay, and Trinity Eason] are some of the most impressive student athletes, so my expectations are always high and we got pretty close to what our goals were.”

They came out of the meet winning an Emerging Elite 3rd place in the 4X800m. They also achieved a new record time for Woodbridge High of 9:24:38.
The girls’ track team perfectly demonstrated what it means to be student athletes, balancing school, everyday practices, and winning third place at nationals. WHS is excited to see what the girls’ track team and Coach Angatia have in store for next year.
