At Woodbridge High School, The Saffron Alliance Club hosted Diwali Week, known as the festival of lights. There was a week-long celebration including events for students and staff to enjoy.

The Saffron Alliance members came together to help with Diwali week.

Which is a Hindu festival of lights, held in the period of October to November which typically lasts five to six days.

Furthermore, Diwali is an Indian holiday that is observed to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, and good over evil. The ability to overcome the darkest obstacles to find a light at the end of the tunnel.

Ms. Johoal, a teacher and club leader, was in charge of planning and organizing the events. On the week, they said, “We hope to educate and include more members from WHS to participate in the future.”

During the week, there was a multitude of events and celebrations. Including a door decorating contest and the decorating of the main lobby. Additionally, there were morning announcements commemorating and educating people about influential famous Hindus

They decorated the main lobby and the walkways with rangoli designs, an Indian art form using colored sand or powder to decorate courtyards or other flat surfaces. Whoever had the best-decorated door won.

The prize for winning the door decorating contest was an Indian ice cream treat, called kulfi.

The winner was Mrs. Waters’s Block one class, the main attraction being a doorbell that played a Diwali song once pressed.

Henna is a dye prepared from the plant Lawsonia inermis, also known as the henna tree. During the week, it took place in the cafeteria, according to Ms. Johoal, “Saffron Alliance club members are quite talented in doing henna. We have a handful of members that can do henna and are very skillful.”

Lastly, there are plans for having henna events later this year.  Saffron alliance has enjoyed putting together Diwali week celebrations for the school. They hope to educate and shine some light on Hinduism while also making it fun for all.
