Following the release of Short n’ Sweet, Sabrina Carpenter has had a stark increase in popularity. Her tour for the album recently came to a close, and after such a successful year, there’s only one way to round it out; a Netflix Christmas special.
One of Sabrina’s most iconic songs is Nonsense, and last year she re-released the song, but with Christmas-themed lyrics. The title A Nonsense Christmas was recycled for her special, which was then released on Dec. 6.
This special gave the chance for Sabrina’s dry, and quite adult, humor to shine. Eliciting a PG-13 rating, prepare yourself for witty and crude jokes. But, despite the handful of skits littered throughout the special, the focus here isn’t the comedy, it’s the music. So how does that stack up?
Sabrina racked up quite the roster of guest stars, most of which she covered iconic Christmas songs. Her first guest star: Tyla, with whom Sabrina duetted This Christmas, originally by Donny Hathaway. Her second guest was country music star Shania Twain, singing Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt together. The third and penultimate guest was Kali Uchis, singing I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, by Jimmy Boyd.
The final guest, and perhaps most anticipated, was Chappell Roan, who saw her boost in popularity this year. Together, Chappell and Sabrina sang a stunning rendition of Last Christmas by Wham! Their voices blended beautifully, and it gave fans a chance to see two of their favorite pop icons from this year working together.
Sabrina Carpenter’s A Nonsense Christmas is a fun little watch if you need a little boost this season. It balances the Christmas music with humor, and with a runtime of only 50 minutes, it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Cuddle up with a mug of hot chocolate and your favorite blanket, throw this special on, and have yourself a merry little Christmas filled with laughs and great tunes.
