Barrons are Blazing!
The Woodbridge High School softball team is putting together a standout season, winning their first division championship since 2021. They currently hold a record of 16-3 and have won 12 of their last 13 games. With the county tournament around the corner, the momentum has tuned up at the right moment for the Barrons.
Seeding meetings for the GMC softball tournament are set to begin Monday, May 11. Head coach Mike Jago will try and fight for a top 4 seed, as the Barrons certainly have shown they deserve it. With their longest winning streak in years of 12 straight, Woodbridge has established themselves as one of the top teams in the area.
Slugging Offense
“We are hitting the ball very well. When you mix that with clean defense it’s clean softball all around, which makes winning softball” Jago says.
The mix of a slugging team average of .391 and an average of 2 runs a game given up is a combination for winning. Jago is only in his third stint as head coach. He has done a great job of leading his team throughout the way.
One key player in the lineup, senior captain Melanie Alejandro is hitting a whopping .453 along with 2 homeruns and 24 hits. Her contribution to the offense has been the main jump start to the offense.
“It’s a big deal for us to cheer each other on in between every pitch, and to be on the fence the whole game” says Alejandro.
County Tournament
Woodbridge now turns its attention to the county tournament where they are projected to be seeded within the top 3. A high seed of that caliber would give the Barrons a great position in the tournament for matchups. Coach Jago knows how important it is to keep his team confident.
“We think our body of work has spoken for itself. We just have to continue our style of softball and the rest will take place.” Jago says.
With a division title secured and a lengthy win streak, Woodbridge enters the month of May as a team to watch. Be on the lookout for the Barrons continuing their win streak, and making a deep run in the county tournament.
