Students, Technology and Education
Students at the high school have been using their phones and using technology during class for a long time, raising questions about whether phones help or hurt learning. Teachers, students and parents shared their different opinions on how phones affect focus in school.
Some students said phones can be useful in class. One student said, “Phones help me look for information faster than my chromebook.” Other students said phones allow them to stay organized with assignments and remain in contact with their families in case of an emergency.
However, not all students see phones as helpful, another student said, “Sometimes I get distracted by messages or social media.” This shows that phones can take attention away from learning.
Are Phones A Distraction?
Teachers expressed concern about how often students use their phones. One teacher said, “Many students check their phones during lessons, which makes it harder for them to stay focused .” The teacher added that phones can be helpful for research, but only when their use is allowed in class because they can get distracted for the whole class which makes it difficult for the students to catch up with the assignments.
Parents also shared different opinions about phone use in school. One parent said, “Phones can help students stay connected and organized, but too much use can affect their focus in class.” Some parents said they support stricter rules to limit distractions during school hours because they see the difference when their children have phones in school and when they don’t.
Despite the different opinions, phones remain a part of students’ daily lives in school. While some believe phones are useful tools for information, others think they create more distractions than benefits. The discussion about phone use in schools is going to continue as students and teachers try to defend their position in this problem.
