Mortal Kombat
With the new Mortal Kombat II being released on May 8, a lot of the buzz that has been circulating social media has been much more positive than negative. Many critics and early viewers described the film as a tremendous improvement over the previous 2021 film.
Mortal Kombat II is an R-rated action fantasy-film based off of the Mortal Kombat games; centered around martial arts and other fantasy fighting. The game received significant attention, mostly positive reviews, and so Midway Games, developers of the game, released multiple sequels in the 90’s.
Mortal Kombat (1992) was a 2D fighting game developed by Midway and was designed to compete with the game Street Fighter II released in 1991, by offering darker, more realistic, and excessive alternatives. The game itself was dark, gritty, and mysterious, with a focus on Chinese mythology and martial arts.
From Game To Movie
The game was originally played on arcade cabinets, and was then ported to the Sega Genesis and SNES in 1993. The game was very successful due to digitalizing real actors, allowing characters to have “Fatality” finishing moves and a unique five-button control scheme along with the joystick. Players fought 1v1, aiming to drain their opponents health bar in best-of-three-rounds.
Unlike Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat offered a block button instead of pulling back on the original joystick. Players would receive a message on the screen that then allowed them to enter a command to perform a brutal finishing move. The game also offered features such as juggling, allowing players to launch their opponents airborne and perform multiple attacks and special moves such as Scorpion’s spear or Sub-Zero’s freeze.
The game’s most famous sound was the deep-voiced announcer and the “Toasty!” exclamation from the sound designer Dan Forden. The Mortal Kombat games received a lot of controversy however, due to its gruesome visuals and graphics, which lead to its ESRB rating system.
The game featured many main characters, such as Liu Kang, a Shaolin monk who’s also the main protagonist, Scorpion, nemesis of Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, a Hollywood action star, Sonya Blade, a US Special Forces agent, Raiden, God of Thunder, Kano, a mercenary and leader of the Black Dragon clan, Reptile, the first hidden character in fighting game history, and lastly bosses like Goro (sub-boss) and Shang Tsung (final boss).
A New Player
One of the key differences between the original Mortal Kombat game and the 2021 film is new character, Cole Young, someone never mentioned in the original games before. The lore within the movie is also tampered with. An example of this would be how the original game is centered around the 10th Mortal Kombat tournament, but in the movie the tournament is looked over and never took place. The movie dives deeper into the supernatural origins of fighters all coming from one source, but in the original game the powers of the fighters had many different origins. The film was also heavy on CGI use.
Johnny Cage, one of the seven playable characters from the 1992 game was completely absent from the film, but is teased for a sequel. The main hero of the original game, Liu Kang, was made a supporting mentor in the movie, and Kano, the main villain and arch-nemesis of Sonya was made an ally, a shift from his character’s main role. The film also introduces characters that weren’t included in the original game until later games were released.
As more than what was mentioned had been altered from the game for the film, the 2026 film has new expectations as its release is making its way closer. Fans expect a huge improvement, hoping to focus on the actual tournament that made the game what it is today. Viewers hope to see an improvement in the fighting choreography and better character development.
Those who watched the first film believed its plot to be poorly made, as the movie relied on new main character Cole Young. However overall, Mortal Kombat fans anticipate the new movie to have many improvements and to make up for lost lore that was completely removed from the 2021 film.
