The Penn Relay Carnival is one of the oldest track and field competitions in the United States hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. This three day event brings more than 15,000 participants from high schools, colleges, track clubs throughout North America and over the world with Jamaica being one of the most popular countries there.
Different Environment
Running with over thousands of people watching can either make or break your performance. The runners from our school who got to experience this feeling had to alter their mindset in order to stay ready for the big run.
”Running there was such a surreal moment,” stated Junior Manraj Panag “I felt a lot of anxiety and nervousness”.
The Franklin Field Stadium is over 131 years old being one of the oldest collegiate stadiums ever built. The stadium hosts over 40k seats and brings in over 140k viewers through media and their broadcasting service FLO track.
Senior Captain Ethan Garnett Stated “The atmosphere really boosted my adrenaline during my races”
New Environment, Same Goal
Many athletes come short of their goals, but Junior captain Marissa Martinez executed on hers. In front of so many people, the mindset needs to remain that runners want to continue to get better each and every day. Personal records and achievements are also high on the light, making an already memorable day even better.
“My goal was to PR (Personal Record) and go below 65 and I got to run a 64” stated Martinez.
Even though Junior star track athlete Ciara Murphy didn’t hit her desired goal of 55, she went and showed out, anchoring the girls 4×4 running a 57 split.
It was a great day for Barrons Track & Field, showcasing just how talented they are and how hard they have worked over the course of this season. The Barron Perspective wishes our track and field athletes the best of luck in the rest of their season!
