A New Era for Woodbridge High Bowling
This year, there’s a new face leading the boys bowling team at Woodbridge High School — Mr. Maddock. After years of coaching experience and a history with WHS, Mr. Maddock is stepping in as head coach, bringing both excitement and high expectations to the lanes.
Team Reactions to the Change
The Barron’s Perspective had the chance to sit down with Mr. Maddock himself, as well as some members of the boys’ bowling team, to get their thoughts on this big change.
When I asked Anthony L., a senior bowler, about his first reaction to hearing Mr. Maddock was named head coach, he said, “I thought that it was going to be interesting, being that, you know, we had coach Small. She was a very good, winning coach. Mr Maddock is coming up from STA, so I do think he does know some things. It’s going to be a pretty exciting season, we’ll see…”
The team has high hopes for the upcoming season under Mr Maddock’s leadership. Mickey G. shared, “Our hopes are to continue having a winning season, competing in the GMC this season, being in states, and you know winning states.” “It’s clear the team is aiming high and wants to keep up the tradition of success.”
Ryan Montalvo, another member of the team, talked about what qualities Mr. Maddock brings. “Obviously good qualities, you know he’s going to want to help us win, and I’m expecting something good because he knows what he’s doing,” Ryan said.
Coach Maddock’s Experience and Goals
Mr Maddock himself has a long history with bowling. “Well, I’ve coached bowling; this would be my 11th season. I was coaching at a different school in the conference, St. Thomas. I also used to coach here at WHS previously, before I had kids. I wasn’t actually planning on coming back, but when I heard that Coach Small had decided to step away, I saw the opening, you know, I love this building and working with the kids, so I saw the opportunity to apply, and now we’re here, expecting the best for this season,” he explained.
As for his goals, Mr. Maddock is focused on keeping up the school’s strong tradition.
Focusing on Motivation and Sportsmanship
When it comes to motivating students, Mr. Maddock emphasises teamwork and sportsmanship:
“My job is coaching, so my job is to keep my bowlers motivated. Bowling is a very different competition compared to other sports. A lot of the teams hype each other up while they’re bowling, so it’s pretty nice when it comes to sportsmanship. They always have that competitive edge and know what’s expected of them. I always try to keep them focused and let them know they are capable of anything if they put in the hard work and have the right mentality.”
Looking Ahead
With Mr. Maddock in charge, the boys’ bowling team is looking forward to another great season. The team is ready to work hard, stay motivated, and hopefully bring home more wins for Woodbridge High School.
