March 9 marked the start of boys volleyball tryouts, but also the start of a new spring season. The team as well as the head coaches were asked their opinions and hopes regarding the upcoming season.
Tryouts
Varsity head coach Peter Jacovinich really prioritizes skill and how the team would work together when deciding on the team. Those priorities help him decide on the leadership roles.
“We have seven seniors so I wouldn’t say we need one leader, but a little leadership from everyone would be helpful,” said Jacovinich.
Junior varsity coach Kourtney Brodniak, also gave her thoughts on what she looks for in tryouts which is an all around committed player. Coach Brodniak is also looking forward to seeing how the team has improved but also all the new additions to the team, one addition being senior Bradley Henriquez.
“I look for a team player, someone who is committed to the team all season, someone who knows the game of volleyball and someone who will be there to support their team,” said Brodniak.
While the coaches shared their thoughts and priorities for this season, we spoke to senior varsity player Mohamed Abusharia to give more insight on the team’s mindset and how he plans to step up.
‘’I am going to come with energy, be more mature, and encourage my teammates,” said Abusharia.
As the team prepares for their first scrimmage we spoke to junior, Eric Campaignio, who gave us his thoughts on what challenges he thinks his team will face. He shared that although they have great hitters their passing isn’t the best which is something they have to work on.
Senior Leadership
While upperclassmen focus on leadership and improvement freshman Benjamin Zarzuela shared that he is looking forward to growing as a team and also playing with new people.
With all the new addition’s to the team and work they are putting in, the coaches and athletes hope that by putting in the work, the wins will follow.
“We’re just trying to improve every game,” said Jacovinich. We haven’t been very successful the last two years, so we are not going to be looking to run right out of the gate.”
