A Strong Start for the Barrons
Led by head coach Mike Jago, the Barrons softball team have had a great start to their 2025-2026 season.
Softball have won their last four games. The highlight of this streak comes from a 6-0 victory over Red Division Old Bridge. This was a huge win for the Barrons. A sharp record will be a huge boost for seeding in the county tournament.
“We get along very well,” said Jago. “I believe when a team is very close and connected it brings out the best performance in everyone.”
After some inconsistent seasons in the past, this year’s group is starting to click. The Barrons have not only been more disciplined on the field, but also sluggers at the plate. With a team batting average of .344, it’s 61 points higher than the year prior!
Softball Team Sparks
Part of this offensive spark comes from leadoff hitter and senior captain Riley Vazquez. “To me it’s very important to lead off and get my team to a hot start in order to jump on opponents and have the momentum early,” Riley states. Vazquez is hitting .346 as the three year starter looks forward to capping off her senior season strong.
Another key player to this scorching hot Barrons team is starting pitcher and senior captain Madelyn Brenner. Brenner has started in all nine games throughout the season and has picked up six wins.
“When we’re hot, it’s a very fun time in the dugout. Vibes are usually high, candy gets passed around, just overall a fun experience to have with the girls,” Brenner said.
Brenner has etched her name as one of the top pitchers in the county and she’s looking forward to helping the Barrons win more games.
In the Driver Seat
A lot of early success for the Barrons have come from high team chemistry and the desire to win. As the season continues, Woodbridge is currently at the top of the White American Division. They face the opportunity to clinch a division title. With upcoming games against Edison, Perth Amboy and Middlesex, a clean sweep for the Barrons will hand them their first division title since 2021.
“We are always looking at who’s next and to compete at our highest level. If we can come out looking to play to the best of our abilities, we are confident that we can come out on top,” Jago states.
The Barrons have already proven they can compete with anyone making them one of the top teams to beat in the county. If this stretch is any indication, softball could be in for a special season.
