Barrons Ready ¨Fore¨ New Golf Season

by Merdan Olevic

The Woodbridge Barrons’ golf team is teed up for a fresh season, focused on building upon the successful run they began last year under Coach Kirk.

Coach Kirk, with nearly twenty years of golf under his belt, took over the program last season, after Coach O’Brien retired, and quickly went to work building a new program. At its core, it’s quite simple: Kirk has set a standard where the players make a commitment to the program and work toward improving every day.

To reach that standard, the golf team will practice five days a week at the gym, on the oval, or at a course. During practice, the team will focus on the ¨fundamentals, or sometimes a certain weakness in an individual’s game,” Kirk said.

Propelling the team will be junior Mike Parfitt, who will play his third season of golf as a Barron. This season, Parfitt has his eyes set on States and the GMC tournament, and hopes that his level of play will catch the attention of colleges. “Hopefully–this year and next year are my prime years–so, I can just maybe get a scholarship and play for a college,” said Parfitt.

The Barrons will represent Woodbridge during home matches at the Colonia Country Club. Depending on the weather conditions, the team will compete in 15-20 matches and will hope for strong play from all of its players to improve upon their 10-6 mark from last season.

With such a lofty goal, 2015 may be the year for a ¨hole in one¨ for the Woodbridge Barrons.
