Dr. Leonard L. Bailey performs the first ever baboon-to-human heart transplant at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California. A 14-day old infant, known as “Baby Fae”, received the transplant after having a defective heart. Baby Fae was born with a deformity in which parts or all of the left side of the heart is missing, known as hypoplastic left-heart syndrome. Previously only three other humans received animal heart transplants.
