The Barron Perspective

    Math: Easy as Pi

    by Brandon Kreusch

The Barron Perspective recently sat down with Mr. Smith to discuss his Math Tutorial Club.

Barron Perspective: Why did you take over as the advisor of this club?

Mr. Smith: It was offered to me four or five years ago. I took over because I’m well-qualified to help, appreciate the challenge of being asked to answer any math question from any math class in the school, and because I like the idea that my students know where to come find me for help.

BP: What do students do in this club?

MS: They come to get help with any math class in school.

BP: Do students from all math tracks attend, or do you notice one particular track is more represented?

MS: Students from all tracks are represented and all tracks are probably equally represented.

BP: What is your favorite part of this club?

MS: Meeting students who I otherwise wouldn’t meet and helping them understand something that they’ve been struggling to understand. Seeing an “aha” moment is very rewarding.

BP: Do you have any student success stories that have come out of the tutorial club?

MS: There are a lot. Many students find that their understanding of the material improves after they come to get help. Most students see a clear rise in their grades.

BP: If students think they may need help in math but are hesitant about coming to the club, what would you say to them?

MS: They should come. I think maybe calling it a “club” might intimidate some students because they may think that there’s a social aspect to it. There’s not. Students sit alone or in groups (by their choice) and I walk around and help them with whatever their questions are. Some students are regulars, but others just show up when there’s something they don’t understand.

BP: Is there anything else you would like to add?

MS: I think one of the best uses of Math Tutorial Club is for students to come and do their homework. If they have no questions, that’s great for them! If they have questions, they can get help right away!

The Math Tutorial Club meets on Mondays from 7:00 to 7:40 a.m., as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:40 to 3:30 p.m.
